This March, Waterstone gallery is pleased to exhibit work by Barbara Mason and guest artist Tony Furtado. For their show, Whales in the Room, both Mason and Furtado were moved to create work about nature's struggle to survive and thrive in a wildly changing planet. Mason's abstract etchings full of movement and watery blue hues, reminds us of the delicate ecosystem of underwater kelp forests. Furtado's ceramic sculptures were inspired by the Orca whale pods he observed while traveling in the San Juan islands. Furtado writes "While researching online, I discovered a birds-eye view picture of a pod of Orcas. Something about this vantage point was impactful. Maybe it's their silent beauty against the vast and empty ocean, but this overhead view made their struggle apparent".  In viewing this exhibit, we hope visitors will recognize the whale in the room, and be inspired to help change the negative impact we've had on our planet and its species.
