Shu-Ju Wang and Lehuauakea

Joint Ecology

October 5-31, 2021

First Thursday: Oct 7, gallery open til 8:00pm

Artist’s Talk: Sunday, Oct. 24, 11am

Closing Reception: Fri. Oct. 29, 5-8:00pm

Shu-Ju Wang and guest artist Lehuauakea bring their individual approaches to how artists engage with ecology. Lehuauakea will be showing a series of traditional and contemporary textile pieces using Native Hawaiian kapa (bark cloth) and mixed media. These works address themes of intersectional Indigenous identity, ecological cosmologies, and cultural reclamation through a Native Hawaiian lens. Wang will be showing paintings, prints, and artist's books documenting the intimate relationship of all beings -- from trees to fungi, humans to beavers, from the living to the no-longer living or not-ever -- we each build, maintain, and influence the ecological outcome of the natural world.

Joint Ecology is a part of TextileX/Portland Month 2021, and is partly supported by a grant from Regional Arts and Culture Council.
